Welcome to MitGlobal Dubai Sports highlighting our blog post that concern sports such as tennis. Today we are discussing an important part of a tennis game anywhere in the world, the size and measurements of a tennis court. Before we continue to discuss other specifics, let’s first handle the topic at hand – What is the size of a tennis court in square meters?

We will be discussing the following topics: Tennis Court Dimensions, Tennis Court Sizes, Tennis Court Measurements. With these topics in consideration, we can get a comprehensive understanding of tennis court sizes and investigate the nature of what makes up a tennis court.

Let’s get started. It’s time to explore the area that is a tennis court and what makes up the boundaries on either side of the participants.

Regulation Court Dimensions

The standard size of a tennis court is codified by the International Tennis Federation (ITF) and its dimensions are used mainly in professional tournament play. The court is 78 feet (23.77 m) long, and its width is 27 feet (8.23 m) for singles matches and 36 feet (10.97 m) for doubles matches. The overall size of a tennis court in square meters is thereby 23.77 m x 8.23 m for singles and 23.77 m x 10.97 m for doubles play.

The ITF guidelines are also adopted by the United States Tennis Association (USTA) and the Fédération Internationale de Tennis (FIT) for play in their respective regions. However, certain regional governing bodies, or regional professional tournaments, may slightly adjust the length and width to accommodate regional court characteristics or regional play preferences.

Court Surface Types

Tennis is often played on different court surfaces. The most common tennis court surfaces are clay courts, grass courts, hard courts, and carpet courts. For players, the court surface holds many differences when it comes to playing style, technique, and physical strain.

Clay courts feature a crushed rock, shale, or brick powder surface and are a very popular playing surface worldwide. This type of court is commonly found in Latin American and European countries, with red clay being the most common. Clay courts are known for playing slowly, allowing for lots of sliding and spin generation.

Grass courts have a short-cut, closely mown layer of grass that can get quite slippery during play. This type of court was the original surface and is most common in Britain and some parts of the United States. Grass courts can be difficult to maintain and are typically found in more expensive private clubs.

Hard courts are the most popular and widespread type of playing surface. This type of court plays quickly and favors aggressive players who look to take advantage of the hard bounce. Hard courts can be made of either asphalt or concrete and come in many colors.

Carpet courts tend to be found in indoor areas as they are easy to install and are usually constructed to be a bit slower in comparison to hard courts. This type of court is great for practicing fundamentals and perfecting tactics. Unlike other types of courts, carpets tend to be much quieter which allows for a more relaxed game.

Court Maintenance

Tennis courts require regular maintenance to keep them playable and safe for players. To maintain a tennis court according to national standards, there are several steps that should be taken.

Watering should take place every day when the court is in session. The court should be dampened, but not flooded so as not to damage the asphalt or concrete underlying surface.

Mowing should occur approximately once a week, depending on the types of grass used. Mowing helps to keep the court even and free from excessive debris.

Court markings, or lines, should be painted or etched into the surface of the court at the beginning of the season and occasionally throughout it for clarity.

Cleaning should be done daily. Any debris on the court should be swept up and thrown away.

Court covers can help to protect the court from debris and rain, as well as sun bleaching.

Regular maintenance of Tennis courts ensure its longevity and improves the quality of play. It is important that all maintenance tasks are undertaken by qualified personnel according to standard specifications.
