The Early Years: Foundations of an Iconic Brand

Adidas was founded in 1924 by Adolf Dassler in Herzogenaurach, Germany. Adolf was a cobbler and saw potential in the field of sports shoe manufacturing. He formed the Dassler Brothers Shoe Company with his older brother Rudolf and focused on providing high quality, innovative sports shoes. After his success, the company became the largest manufacturer of sports shoes in Europe.

Adolf Dassler was a creative and innovative person who constantly worked to improve the quality of his products and find ways to make them more attractive for athletes. He also created several iconic designs such as the three stripes logo, which is still used today. Adolf also developed unique technologies, such as “The Traxion”, a revolutionary sole that improved grip on any type of terrain.

In 1948, the Dassler Brothers Shoe Company was renamed Adidas. The new name is an acronym formed from the initials of Adolf’s first and last name. Adolf’s creativity and passion for sports propelled the company to become an international success story.

The Golden Age of Adidas

The mid-1960s were the start of a golden age for Adidas, with the iconic three stripes logo being created in the first years of the decade. Through the spread of its logo, Adidas saw its global brand recognition and popularity increase exponentially. In 1967, Adidas provided the official match ball of the first-ever European Cup and this cements the company as a big player in the world of sportswear.

Adidas Olympic success during this golden period further amplified its recognizability and popularity. In 1972, Adidas crossed the Atlantic to become the official footwear supplier at the Olympic games in Munich, Germany. The 1972 Olympics proved to be incredibly successful for Adidas, with the three stripes logo being displayed on the sporting world’s highest platform, as well as athletes from Germany, the U.S, and other countries wearing Adidas to represent their countries. In addition to the Olympics, Adidas also became recognised for its sponsorship of German football teams, cementing its status as one of the largest, most recognised brands in the sporting world.

At the end of the golden age in the late 1970s, Adidas started a collaboration with tennis star Stan Smith, who wore their iconic low-top sneaker. This collaboration was seen as revolutionary when it began and helped to forge the company’s reputation as a leader in the sportswear and lifestyle market. The lifestyle element of the brand became increasingly important and still remains a cornerstone of the company’s success.

Recent Years

Since the early 2000s, Adidas has increasingly become one of the world’s most visible and influential sportswear brands. One has to look no further than the powerful ad campaigns that it has produced, the prominent athletes it has outfitted, and the countless successful promotional events that it has hosted.

By far, the most visible tie-in that Adidas has had in recent years is with its prominent athletes. From up-and-coming basketball stars like Damian Lillard to soccer giants like Lionel Messi and David Beckham, Adidas has ensured that its products are seen draped across the best sports stars in the world.

Another success factor for Adidas in recent years has been the proliferation of its lifestyle division, Adidas Originals. Though the brand was originally created to emphasize the class and style of its performance apparel, the Originals division has significantly changed the playing field for the company. Rather than being known solely for sports performance-wear, the Originals division has enabled Adidas to also be seen as a fashion statement.

Adidas has also incorporated more eco-friendly practices into their corporate standards over the last few years. By using recycled material in the soles of certain shoes and being more transparent in the production methods and labor standards of certain factories, this leading brand has gone to great lengths to illustrate that it also takes social responsibility seriously.

Thanks to its emphasis on both performance and style and its rise to prominence for eco-friendly practices, Adidas is now firmly established as one of the world’s most iconic sportswear brands.
